Key Jewelry Making Techniques
Crimping Technique
- String your beads onto the beading wire, leaving about 2–3 inches of wire at each end.
- Slide a crimp bead onto the wire.
- Thread the wire back through the crimp bead to create a loop (around the clasp or jump ring).
- Pull the wire snug so the loop is tight against the clasp/jump ring.
- Place the crimp bead in the crimping tool notch closest to the handle (the oval notch).
- Squeeze the tool firmly to shape the crimp into a tube.
- Rotate the crimp 90° and place it in the second notch (round notch) — squeeze again to round and secure it.
- Trim excess wire close to the crimp using nippers.
- Slide a crimp cover over the crimped bead and gently squeeze closed with crimp tool to hide the crimp.
Opening & Closing Jump Rings
- Hold the jump ring with two pairs of pliers (bent-nose or chain-nose pliers work best).
- Grip the jump ring on either side of the split.
- Gently twist the ends in opposite directions (one toward you, one away from you) to open the ring — do not pull the ends apart sideways, as this will distort the ring.
- To close: Bring the ends back together using the same twisting motion until the ends meet flush.
- Check that the join is tight and smooth — there should be no gap.
